Newly Weds Killed in Hired Car Accident
A young husband’s final request to rescue workers as he lay dying in a car wreck in North Carolina was to save his wife first. It was a selfless plea and one that Will Reid, 26, wanted because he knew his wife was pregnant.
Reid and his wife, Jamie Soukup Reid, 25, died Sunday after their hired car drove off Interstate 26 in Asheville and struck a tree. She died instantly, but her husband was conscious when crews arrived. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later that day.
The couple had just been married in May, and they had only recently announced they were expecting their first child. The Philadelphia newlyweds were in North Carolina to attend a college friend’s wedding, and were on their way to the airport when the accident occurred.
Authorities said the couple was sitting in the backseat during impact. The driver, Rodney Koon, 45, remained hospitalized Wednesday. Charges have not been filed against Koon and the investigation remains ongoing.
The accident shocked Koon’s associates. “He’s a very nice guy, superfriendly,” Dana Kendall, who owns another limo company that serves the Asheville airport, told the Citizen-Times. “It’s really a horrible situation. It’s just tragic.”
