The intersection at Southern Avenue and Evergreen Road in Tempe was reopened Sunday evening after police investigated a three-car, serious-injury crash. Impairment is believed to have been a factor in the 11:40 a.m. collision that occurred after a driver ran a red light. Two people were hospitalized with injuries. The intersection was closed nearly six hours.
A man traveling westbound on Southern ran a red light and collided with a car driven by a 72-year-old woman who was making a legal left turn onto eastbound Southern Avenue. The man’s car also collided with a third vehicle that was legally stopped at the red light. No one in that vehicle was injured.
The man was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the woman was hospitalized with serious injuries. Tempe’s Vehicular Crimes Detectives have reason to believe that impairment was a factor in this collision and the investigation remains ongoing.
