Juvenile Questioned in Connection with 40-Acre Brush Fire

A juvenile was detained for questioning Friday afternoon, June 14, after a brush fire burned about 40 acres in the hills north of UC Riverside. Riverside Deputy Fire Chief Mike Esparza said the cause of the fire was “suspicious.” No homes or buildings burned and no injuries were reported. Riverside County sheriff’s deputies rescued three people off the hill.

The juvenile who was detained appeared to be about 13. He was questioned by a fire investigator, Cal Fire Capt. Dave Cabral. Cabral said the boy would take investigators on the hill “to show us what he saw.” Cabral would not say whether the boy admitted setting the fire.

Almost 250 firefighters on 25 fire engines and in 10 hand crews, as well as airplanes and helicopters, responded to the fire. Crews are expected to be at the scene through Saturday.
