Twenty-five-year-old, Staff Sergeant Matthew Dennison was killed when his motorcycle rear-ended a pickup truck near the Jackrabbit Trail exit on the Interstate 10 at approximately 5:45 p.m., on Sunday. According to DPS spokesperson Carrick Cook, Mr. Dennison’s motorcycle was run over by a second pickup truck but that truck did not hit Mr. Dennison. Mr. Dennison, who was an airman assigned to Luke Air Force Base, was transported to Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and at 7 p.m., he was pronounced dead.
According to Police, Mr. Dennison was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Police do not yet know whether Mr. Dennison was speeding at the time of the accident, but the investigation, which could take weeks to complete, is ongoing. According to Spokesperson Cook, no one else was injured in the accident.
According to Base Officials, Mr. Dennison, who joined the Air Force in August 2006, was assigned to Luke Air Force Base in February of 2007.
Prior to riding a motorcycle, the Air Force, according to ground safety manager of the 56th fighter wing at Luke Air Force Base, Ben Bruce, requires active duty military personnel to complete a motorcycle-training program designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Mr. Bruce said, “Training is the most important thing, we think, to keep people alive. If they decide they want to ride a motorcycle, they have to tell their unit commander.”
Mr. Dennison had completed both the beginner and experienced motorcycle training courses at Luke Air Force Base. He was also a certified Harley Davidson mechanic.
