Spring Weather Leads to Increased Motorcycle Accidents

March 20th marked the first day of spring and as the weather improves, we begin to see more motorcyclists on the road. Unfortunately, an increase in riders generally results in an increase in motorcycle accidents.

In the past few weeks, there have been several reports of motorcycle related injuries and even deaths. The most recent occurred last night claiming the life of yet another rider.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, a fatal motorcycle accident occurred at the ramp that connects the eastbound Loop 101 and the southbound Interstate 17 on Monday evening around midnight.  The victim’s body was found several hours later in the HOV lane, and Police believe the driver of the motorcycle went over the ramp’s barricade and fell off the freeway.  Officers believe that the accident may have resulted from speeding.  The Interstate 17 was closed for several hours after the accident but has since reopened.

Oftentimes, the driver of the car is at fault for the accident because he/she failed to look for or be aware of the motorcyclist.  To avoid an accident, it is important to always be aware of motorcyclists, to allow them to pass you rather than trying to get in front of them and to refrain from turning directly in front of an oncoming rider. Motorcyclists should drive with their high beams turned on at all times to make themselves more visible to cars around them.
