Court documents confirm that an Oklahoma man filed a lawsuit against Merck & Co. on September 12, 2012 contending that Propecia caused him to suffer persistent sexual dysfunction after stopping the drug. Propecia, (finasteride) is manufactured by Merck and is used for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Propecia was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, (FDA) in 1997. This male plaintiff claims that he started Propecia in 2010 and while on the medicine experienced sexual dysfunction. He stopped the medication and his sexual dysfunction persisted. In April 2012, an order was issued by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, consolidating all Propecia lawsuits filed in federal district courts throughout the United States (MDL Docket No. 2331).
Propecia works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into a more potent form, called DHT, which contributes to hair loss. In 2011, the FDA mandated a label change for Propecia, warning that some patients reported persistent post Propecia erectile dysfunction.
Permanent sexual dysfunction can have a life-altering impact on a man and his loved ones. There have been reports of broken homes and suicides. Many men who used Propecia were unaware of the side effect of sexual dysfunction because the drug manufacturer Merck may have led them to believe that any sexual side effect was only temporary. Recent studies and reports suggest that serious side effects of sexual dysfunction can continue for months and years after Propecia is discontinued.
