Fact Sheet: Boys and Juvenile Delinquency
While most adolescent boys do well through their teens, staying out of trouble, graduating from high school, and moving on to college or work, many young boys face great challenges. In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services commissioned a review of the current knowledge and literature to collect information and understand what challenges are faced by boys aged 10 to 18. While the focus of the project was on boys, much of the information that was collected can also apply to girls.
In conjunction with the project, the Department of Health and Human Services released a fact sheet [PDF] that examines some of the recent trends and statistics of male juvenile delinquency. While juvenile crimes have decreased across the board in recent decades, boys still make up more 70% of all juvenile arrests and female juvenile arrests are on the rise. The projects home page can be found here and contains a wealth of information that may be of interest to parents of a troubled youth.
