FDA INCREASES WARNINGS FOR PROPECIA & PROSCAR

On April 11, 2012, the United States Food and Drug Administration, (“FDA”) increased the warnings for the drugs Propecia and Proscar following a flurry of reports of continued sexual dysfunction side effects following discontinuation of these medications.   Propecia warning labels now state warnings for libido disorders, ejaculation disorders and orgasm disorders that may continue for men months after stopping the drug. Proscar’s label will include a warning of decreased libido following the cessation of the medication. Both drug labels will also include a new description of reported cases of male infertility and poor semen quality that improved after the medication was discontinued.

Despite the fact that a clear causal link between finasteride (Propecia and Proscar) to sexual disorders has not been established, the FDA’s action suggests a broader incident of sexual adverse effects in men taking these drugs than first reported. Both doctors and patients should be aware of these sexual dysfunction side effects when evaluating the risks and benefits of the drugs Propecia and Proscar as treatment options. Symptoms associated with these drugs can also include impotence, penile shrinkage, gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, severe depression, and loss of libido.

Propecia was approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness by the FDA in 1997 and Proscar was approved in 1992 for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate. These drugs are only approved for men.

Sexual dysfunction can have a life-altering impact on victims and their families. There have been reports of broken marriages, job loss, and suicides.  Propecia attorneys at the Oracle Law Group are currently investigating cases against the drug manufacturer Merck for Propecia and Proscar.
