Tractor-Trailer Carrying Explosives Rolls Over on US 60

According to Department of Public Safety Spokesman Bob Bailey, on Wednesday evening at 5:20 p.m., a tractor-trailer hauling compressed gas rear-ended another vehicle on the westbound US 60 causing the tractor-trailer to roll over.  A third vehicle was also involved in the accident that occurred at the Dobson Road exit.  The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.  The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries in the accident.  As a result of the accident, the freeway was closed in both directions due to concern that bottles of gas could explode and was expected to be closed for hours.  Due to the explosives, firefighters from Mesa, Chandler and Tempe responded.  According to Mesa Fire Spokesman Captain Forrest Smith, “There’s always concern when we’re dealing with compressed gases.”
