According to Authorities, thirty-six people have been indicted with over fifty felony counts including trafficking in stolen property. The indictment is based on an organized retail crime ring that occurred in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Those indicted are accused of participating in elaborate gift card scams, identity theft, and stealing from the “Angel Tree” Christmas holiday toy program. Scottsdale police discovered the ring last April when they were alerted to a man auctioning retail store credit cards on the internet, and later linked this to a group of people selling shoplifted items from retail stores on the internet and also returning some of the shoplifted items to other stores in return for cash or store credit. It has been estimated that retailers have lost over $1.2 million in the crimes.
The penalties for a conviction of theft depend in large part on the value of the stolen property. For example, theft of property that is valued at a $1000 or less is considered petty theft and would result in misdemeanor charges that may include penalties such as fines, community service, restitution to the victim, and possible jail time. Whereas, theft of property that has a value of $1000 or more is considered Grand theft and may result in felony charges that include penalties such as steep fines, community service, restitution to the victim, and a long-term jail sentence.
